One Vision, Two Counties: How FutureLV is Mapping the Lehigh Valley’s Tomorrow

FutureLV: The Regional Plan is among the first comprehensive plans in the nation that merges the land use, economic, environmental, housing, preservation and farming policies with the transportation planning and investment policies.  FutureLV: The Regional Plan will include the Metropolitan Transportation Plan of Lehigh Valley Transportation Study (LVTS) in one single regional plan. With $4.3 billion in transportation funding, it enables the Lehigh Valley to direct investment where it can have the greatest impact. FutureLV covers both Lehigh and Northampton counties, creating a forward-thinking strategy that leads the region into the future, while addressing the needs of today.

The plan is being updated in the coming months, with the help of not only municipal, community, for-profit and non-profit organization leaders, but neighbors, families and residents from across this region of more than 700,000 people. Everyone’s voice will be needed to shape our best possible future.

In 2019, the LVPC released FutureLV: The Regional Plan. It was the region’s fifth comprehensive plan and in 2023, the Long-Range Transportation Plan portion of FutureLV was updated.

Overall project schedule for the Metropolitan Transportation Plan and Bi-County Comprehensive Plan Update

The multi-year planning cycle is structured as a progressive sequence, starting in 2025 with a focus on comprehensive data updates and the development and testing of a rigorous transportation project selection process. Currently, 2026 serves as the pivotal year for defining direction for core goals, policies, and actions, integrated with extensive public engagement and solicitation efforts to ensure regional alignment.

This initiative is set to culminate in 2027 with plan refinement, regulatory compliance reviews and a concluding community engagement period, leading to the official adoption of the updated plan.
